chokinghazard.org is a campaign from SafeBAE, a survivor-founded, youth-led national organization working to prevent sexual assault and dating violence among middle and high school students. It gives young people, parents and the adults who work with them the facts about choking during sex, and what to do about it.
Young people experience sexual violence at extremely high rates, yet most schools and communities fail to offer education about how to prevent it. SafeBAE was founded to change that.
Teen survivors came together during the filming of the Peabody Award-winning Netflix documentary Audrie & Daisy. None of them had ever received meaningful education about consent, Title IX, or how to recognize and prevent sexual violence, so they set out to build what they never had: a way to stop what happened to them from happening to anyone else.
That is why the “BAE” in SafeBAE stands for Before Anyone Else, and why the work starts in middle and high school.

Choking during sex has become common among young people, often starting before college. Songs, books and shows present it as a joke, a turn-on or a sign of romance, and they almost never show the harm.
We made chokinghazard.org so young people and the adults around them can find the facts in one place: what choking does to the brain and body, why there is no safe way to do it, and what to do if it happens.
